The future of gas power

The role of gas in the UK's future electricity mix
The future of gas power
What role should gas play in our future electricity mix? In 2012 Green Alliance worked with business and other NGOs to identify a way forward for gas power.

Natural gas plays an important role in Britain’s power sector, and provided over a third of our power in 2011. The first dash for gas, following liberalisation of the UK electricity market in 1990, was clearly in the UK's interests, because it significantly reduced carbon emissions and electricity prices. But a second dash for gas would not be, as it would raise the cost of meeting the UK's carbon budgets. However, gas will continue to play a role as a bridging fuel. Our 2012 policy insight considers this further.
