Green Alliance response to Repeal Bill
Thursday 13 July 2017
In response to the publication of the Repeal Bill today, Shaun Spiers, executive director of Green Alliance and chair of Greener UK, said:
“Our environmental protections depend on the government and MPs getting the Repeal Bill right. Around a quarter of the body of law to be transposed falls within the scope of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. And an estimated 80% of our environmental policy stems from EU law - from habitats protections to clean beaches - so it's essential the Repeal Bill allows nothing to fall through the cracks.
“The question is which body or bodies in the UK will hold a future UK government to account if it fails to follow its own laws? The bill published today gives no convincing answer. Its remedies for the governance gap that will open when Britain leaves the EU are woeful and must beefed up by parliament as the bill is amended.
“The threat of fines from the EU has led the government to clean up its act in the past, for example when it stopped pumping raw sewage into the ocean on a regular basis. Without a similar incentive, there is little to stop environmental protections being seriously weakened after Brexit.”
