Green Alliance appoints new executive director

Leading think tank Green Alliance [1] announces the appointment of new executive director, Shaun Spiers.

Shaun will join Green Alliance on 5 June 2017. He is a highly accomplished chief executive, having led the Campaign to Protect Rural England since 2004, and is widely respected amongst the sector and beyond.
At CPRE, he developed a progressive vision for the countryside which won the support of the organisation’s broad church of members and branches, other stakeholders and of government. This week’s Housing White Paper bore the marks of CPRE’s ideas over several years of research and advocacy.
Shaun joins Green Alliance at a critical moment for the future of the UK environment. He brings vision, strong leadership, as well as excellent political skills and judgement. He has a wealth of experience in building effective coalitions, and achieving political change.
Alongside its influential policy work on energy, resources and the natural environment, Green Alliance is co-ordinating the Greener UK coalition, launched in December 2016. [2] This collaboration between 13 of the UK’s major environmental organisations is pressing for the UK’s environmental protections and climate leadership to be strengthened as we leave the EU.

Shaun Spiers commented:
“I am delighted to take up this post at such a pivotal time for the British environment. Brexit is a once in a generation chance to strengthen environmental protection, improve countryside quality, and set a path to a low carbon and resource efficient future. But it also carries with it great risks. Green Alliance’s work with other green and civil society groups and progressive businesses will be essential to building a vision of the sort of country we want to be, and ensuring the best possible environmental outcomes.”

Green Alliance’s chair, Dame Fiona Reynolds, commented:
“We are delighted that someone with Shaun’s experience, skills and insight will be leading Green Alliance at this crucial time for environmental policy.”

[1] Green Alliance is a charity and independent think tank focused on ambitious leadership for the environment. We have a track record of over 35 years, working with the most influential leaders from the NGO, business, and political communities. Our work generates new thinking and dialogue, and has increased political action and support for environmental solutions in the UK.

[2] Greener UK is a coalition of 13 major environmental organisations, with a combined public membership of 7.9 million. The coalition was launched in December 2016, united in the belief that leaving the EU is a pivotal moment to restore and enhance the UK’s environment.

[3] Shaun Spiers takes over from Matthew Spencer, who held the role for six years and is now director of campaigns, policy and influencing at Oxfam GB.

[4] Tamsin Cooper and Leah Davis will continue to serve as joint acting directors in the interim period.
