Taxing private jets: raising revenue from highly polluting, luxury private aviation
Download pdfDate:
Summary
Private aviation is a luxury only a small fraction of the population can afford, but private jet travel is growing, and with it comes increased emissions. Private jets release ten times more carbon per passenger on average than commercial flights, but often incur less tax than a car driver making the same journey. Several organisations have called for private aviation to be taxed more heavily and in accordance with the polluter pays principle.
This briefing sets out:
- How many private jet flights take place within and from the UK, and their associated emissions
- Different options for taxing private aviation and how much revenue these could raise
- A summary of how other countries are considering taxing private jets
