Summary

Electrification of transport and industry is crucial to cutting emissions and reaching net zero, but some businesses report facing prohibitive wait times and costs for grid connections. We consulted with stakeholders across industry, transport and the power system and found this challenge is only set to worsen. Electricity demand in the UK has fallen in recent decades, but is now projected start growing year on year, with up to 42% of industrial sites at risk of capacity constraints by 2030, rising to 75% by 2040.

In this briefing, we present the complexities underlying the UK’s current capacity constraints and detail recommendations for all stakeholders participating in the energy market to unlock an electrified UK industry and low carbon economy.
