Summary
The government has committed to tackling inflation and increasing disposable income by the end of this parliament. Rising food prices, especially for meat and dairy, are a key reason people are feeling the strain on their wallets.
As we have shown, there is ample opportunity to create a more secure food system by expanding production of, and access to, protein-rich plant foods. This briefing spotlights the plant-based meat sector specifically. These products replicate the taste and texture of meat for familiar meals, such as lasagne made with plant-based mince. Although many products are already available, sales have stalled and the UK risks losing its global leadership position.
We recommend that the government reignite growth in the sector through targeted funding, supply chain development, retail accountability measures and regulatory flexibility, to secure benefits for food security, public health, economic development and farming.
