Summary
Unhealthy diets are costing the UK twice over: at the checkout and through taxes spent treating diet related ill health. Rising food prices have hit healthy options hardest, with the most deprived fifth of the population now needing to spend almost half of their disposable income to afford a nutritionally adequate diet.
This briefing explores the money people could save with government action to make people healthier. We estimate the taxpayer savings from reducing obesity rates, and explore two concrete interventions that could make healthy eating more affordable.
