UK energy security: the benefits of diversification

Summary

As geopolitical tensions rise, securing the UK’s energy supply grows increasingly urgent. This must be achieved alongside reducing emissions and increasing affordability for users. The government’s focus on domestic energy supply overlooks the complex trade offs involved. A diverse energy mix may offer better resilience and greater cost efficiency.

This report examines two key areas: managing power during ‘wind droughts’ with better storage and interconnections, and sourcing green hydrogen for industry and back up power generation. Both face challenges around cost and scalability that are best tackled by a diverse energy strategy. The report recommends the government develops a clearer strategy in 2025 that defines what energy security means for the UK.
