Summary
Energy bills remain £478 higher than in 2021, with almost nine million UK households in fuel poverty. But this doesn’t have to be the reality. By implementing targeted measures, the government could reduce a typical household bill by up to £178 per year by 2030, with some rental households seeing savings of up to £587 annually.
In this briefing, we outline a comprehensive package of immediate and long-term actions: moving levies off electricity bills, reducing system costs through measures like lowering voltage on the network and implementing minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties.
These measures offer a route to immediate savings while limiting the long-term impact on public finances. They also incentivise heat pump uptake and are compatible with further support for fuel poor households. With the Warm Homes Plan and Energy Independence Bill on the horizon, the government has the tools to act now.
