Closing the loop: four steps towards 100% aluminium packaging recycling
Resources and waste policy in England is undergoing its first major shake up in a generation. Following the release of its new strategy, the government has published a series of consultations that promise to change how manufacturers produce packaging, and how citizens, local authorities and waste managers deal with used material.
These proposals promise to improve a system regarded as inefficient at best and broken at worst. But the scale of the changes means they must be carefully planned to make sure they work for all groups concerned and for all the different materials we use.
In this report we shift the spotlight away from plastic to examine how reform can work for another widely used material: aluminium. We recommend a four step approach in order to achieve a near 100 per cent recycling rate.
