Achievements
Green Alliance has been a powerful thought leader at the heart of the modern environmental movement, working with a broad network across government, business and NGOs.
Influencing UK environmental policy and politics for over 45 years

In the years since we started out in 1979, we have built a proud legacy, inspiring new perspectives, securing positive policy change and raising the ambition of senior politicians to do more for the environment.
Below you can read our latest annual report to learn about our most recent achievements.
You can also find out more about our beginnings and successes over the years, including a timeline celebrating our first four decades.
Recent highlights
We led efforts to raise the profile of methane as a major driver of near term warming, helping to shift it up the political agenda ahead of COP29. Our analysis underpinned parliamentary scrutiny, with our evidence cited 86 times in the House of Lords report ‘Methane: keep up the momentum’.
We made the case for the development and delivery of a national methane action plan ahead of COP30 to pull the “climate emergency brake” this decade. This plan was delivered, and now we are working on encouraging the government to deliver on its promises and raise its ambition.
Following the 2024 general election, fractures emerged in the cross-party consensus on climate action, so we led a strategic push to rebuild it.
Through our Impact 2025 initiative, we unified the sector around a shared narrative, ensuring that nature restoration and net zero remain non-partisan priorities for government. This work culminated at our conference ‘Rebuilding the environmental consensus’ where we convened leaders from across the political spectrum, business and civil society to align thinking and confirm the strong and broad support for ambitious political leadership on the environment in the UK.
We worked with health and environmental partners to build the case for banning disposable vapes, helping to bring the issue onto the political agenda.
We highlighted the scale of waste and the loss of critical materials like lithium, reframing these products as a resource and environmental problem as well as a public health concern. We also provided evidence to parliament and supported cross-sector advocacy.
This contributed to the UK government introducing a nationwide ban on disposable vapes from June 2025.
In our podcast episode ‘After the ban‘ we explore the loopholes and new threats already on the horizon, and discuss the work still needed to address the problem for good.
We established and led the Election Hub in the run up to the 2024 general election, convening political leads from across the environment sector from late 2023 through to polling day.
Through regular strategy sessions, shared messaging and rapid response co-ordination, we aligned the sector around a small set of priorities for climate, nature and resources. This helped maintain political salience during the campaign and shaped engagement in the first 100 days of the new parliament.
From 2016 to 2021, we led the Greener UK coalition to shape post-Brexit environmental governance and legislation.
We co-ordinated over 40 organisations, using the Greener UK Risk Tracker to identify gaps and maintain pressure throughout the bill’s passage. This work helped to secure the Environment Act 2021, including legally binding targets, environmental principles and the creation of the Office for Environmental Protection.
The coalition work now continues through our Legislation and Governance Unit.
Between 2021 and 2023, we were a consistent advocate for a zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, engaging officials and building cross-sector support for regulatory targets.
Our report ‘Accelerating the electric vehicle revolution’ set out a clear policy design for binding sales targets, helping to demonstrate how the UK could phase out new petrol and diesel cars. The ZEV mandate came into force in 2024, making this approach a central part of UK climate policy.
The work on cutting emissions from vehicles continued in 2025’s ‘Charging ahead’ where we provide direction on what government can do to increase the uptake of zero emission heavy goods vehicles.
