Summary

Businesses of all sizes will play an essential role in helping the government meet the goal of clean power by 2030 by decarbonising their electricity consumption. Likewise, decarbonising will help make businesses more resilient by cutting their electricity consumption and reducing their exposure to volatile prices. However, with no “one size fits all” approach to decarbonising, the process is not straightforward nor the same for all businesses. Government support is needed to bring clarity and simplicity.

In this briefing, we offer a playbook of options that business can use to decarbonise, from measures that increase energy efficiency to acquiring genuinely green electricity from an energy supplier. Following each option we further detail a list of measures that the government should take to make it easier for businesses to adopt such options.

These policies would unlock significant potential to reduce business electricity demand and expand renewable generation, boosting the government towards their clean power goal.
