Briefing

Reforming planning for decarbonised power: with net zero, nature and the public at its heart

Download

Date:

4 March, 2024

Summary

To achieve the target of a decarbonised power system by 2035, the UK must rapidly advance renewable energy projects and electricity infrastructure.

Despite some progress, recent years have seen planning delays, grid connection issues and global supply chain competition. Environmental assessments are said to contribute to these delays, though not to undertake them risks backlash.

In this briefing, we map out the planning context around renewables and explain what needs to change to speed up the development of a clean power system, including greater public awareness. Acting on our recommendations would help to streamline renewable infrastructure development, address opposition and safeguard nature.
