Summary
The Dasgupta Review, commissioned by the UK Treasury in 2019, makes the case for changing our economic system to better account for the value provided by nature. Without nature, there is no economic growth. And yet implementation of the Review’s seminal findings has been slow.
The current government understands that our economy is not delivering real prosperity for most people and that nature is important for our national wellbeing, but we need imaginative thinking to address these urgent issues in tandem. So how do we get there?
We’ll hear from Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta and a distinguished expert panel on why a healthy environment is so integral to a well-functioning economy and what government, business and finance must do to shift our economic system to one that values nature and begins to restore our natural assets and wealth.
Touching on a wide range of topics that may include private finance for nature, the role of public institutions like the Bank of England and National Wealth Fund, embedding long-termism in government thinking, and how measures of growth and the public finances can better reflect the importance of natural assets, we’ll discuss actionable policy solutions to take us step by step towards a healthier environment and more prosperous economy.
