Short term solutions to fix the heat pump market, reduce emissions and save on bills

Overview

The UK was once a leader in low carbon heating and energy efficiency. But we are now lagging behind, particularly in retrofitting heat pumps. A key reason for this is a lack of workforce skills. Our research, jointly published with the Overseas Development Institute, explores labour shortages and skills gaps in depth and suggests policy solutions to help solve the bottlenecks. While training (and retraining) sufficient numbers of UK workers is the immediate priority. The report concludes that the UK government may also need to encourage skills from abroad to support the rapid scale-up needed to get back on track with its net zero targets.
