Summary

As part of a broad suite of policy measures, the tax system could be a powerful government tool to deliver a net zero, sustainable economy, but so far, the Treasury has hesitated.

Now, a BritainThinks survey for our TransformTax project reveals the public want them to act: there is strong public support for changes to the tax system that make environmentally damaging behaviour more expensive and help people and businesses do the right thing.

The Treasury’s Net Zero Review offers it the perfect opportunity to transform the tax system and make it suitable for a green recovery and a sustainable future economy.

For the purposes of the survey, we described several potential green taxes that the government might implement and asked the public what they thought of each. The exact wording used in the survey can be viewed here.
