Election countdown 2024

A new parliament for people, climate and nature

Overview

From January to July 2024, our Political Leadership theme ran a series of events in the countdown to the election, hearing from leading thinkers, experts and decision makers from across Westminster, business and civil society. From what could be in the manifestos and likely green flashpoints, to the cost of living crisis and the budget, we discussed how 2024 would be make or break for action on the climate and nature crises.

Election countdown: the climate challenge for a new parliament

This was the flagship event in our Election Countdown event series for 2024, hearing from leading thinkers, experts and decision makers from across Westminster, business and civil society.

In the wake of scale-backs from both major parties on net zero ambition, we heard from Shadow Secretary of State, Rt Hon Ed Miliband, on how a Labour government would meet the challenge despite receding policy. Green Alliance also launched findings from our final iteration of the Net Zero Policy Tracker, setting out the significant gap in progress from the parliament and what is needed from a new Government to meet the UK’s 5th carbon budget.

The event included light refreshments and networking followed by a presentation of findings from the Green Alliance Net Zero Policy Tracker and a keynote speech from Rt Hon Ed Miliband, before opening up into a panel discussion and audience Q&A.

Caroline Lucas: reflections and lessons from a Green MP

There is no doubt that Caroline Lucas has made an extraordinary contribution to environmental politics over her 14 years as member of parliament for Brighton Pavilion – and, for many years, one of a small number of politicians speaking up for the future of the planet.

Leaving party politics at the door, and with words of wisdom, celebration, and challenge from across parliament, the lobby, and the environmental sector, this will be a memorable and inspiring evening to celebrate ambitious political leadership for the environment.

This event took place on Tuesday 11 June 2024, at the Southbank Centre in London and formed part of our ‘Election Countdown’ events series in 2024.

Webinar series

Green Alliance ran a series of webinars in early 2024 counting down to the election, hosted by director of politics Chris Venables and head of politics Holly Brazier Tope.

These were lively, informal and informative conversations about the election year ahead. From what could be in the manifestos to the likely green flashpoints, we discussed how 2024 is make or break for action on the climate and nature crises.

Across the series we were joined by Jim Pickard, deputy political editor at the Financial Times; Lizzy Buchan, deputy political editor at the Daily Mirror; Sam Alvis, director of energy and environment at Public First;  Jess Ralston, head of energy at ECIU; Lara Spirit from the Times, Dhara Vyas from Energy UK, Roger Harding from Round Our Way, and a host of Green Alliance experts.

The series concluded a week after the election, when executive director Shaun Spiers hosted a debrief episode where we analysed the results of the election and what they meant for the environmental agenda. This episode was also adapted into a podcast.
